So you would like a bird for a pet? Part 1 Before choosing a bird it is a good idea to examine your lifestyle. Do you have the time to give to a large, intelligent bird, or do you want to fill an aviary with colour? Some birds may be better suited to being in an aviary, rather than being an indoor pet.For example, some parakeets, such as Ringnecks, may be too noisy inside. While others, like the neophemas or grass parakeets, (e.g. Tourquosines) may be too flighty for an indoor cage and may become overly stressed and damage themselves. For the busy person, with not much time to devote to a needy bird; finches or canaries can make enchanting pets.

By the time a bird looks sick, it is usually very sick. Generally, all sick birds look the same, no matter what is wrong. They will be fluffed up, with eyes closed and will be less alert and appear sleepy.

Caged birds have high metabolic rates, and so need food and clean water available at all times. For seed eaters it is important to remove husks from the surface of the seed daily, because birds drop these back into the dish, which gives the impression of adequate seed.
