Rat Bait Poisoning |
Rat Bait is extremely harmful to animals as it stops their blood clotting properly. Itdoes this by removing Vitamin K from the bloodstream, which is essential for bloodclotting. If you are at all suspicious that your dog has eaten rat bait bring them to the clinic as soon as possible. If possible also bring the packet the rat bait came in.
Symptoms of poisoning don’t appear for days-weeks after the poison waseaten. The main sign is hemorrhage which can show up as bleeding gums, bleeding nose, blood in vomit, urine, or faeces, lethargy, coughing blood, and unusual swellings. If your dog has ingested rat bait within the last three hours we can lessen the effectof the poison by making your dog vomit. This removes the bait from the stomach andthus decreases the poisons absorption. Even if you are unsure as to whether your doghas eaten rat bait we can induce vomiting and see if there is any evidence of rat bait inthe vomit. If it has been greater than three hours since the bait was eaten then it will havepassed out of the stomach, therefore making the dog vomit after 3 hours does not effectively remove the poison. In this situation your pet will most likely require vitamin K therapy for up to 4 weeks. Blood tests may be performed in order to confirm that poisoning has occurred and to monitor treatment.
