Pancreatitis is when there is inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ that sits next to the small intestine and plays an important role in fat digestion and glucose metabolism.
There are a number of different causes, including breed (Miniature Schnauzers), blunt trauma to the abdomen, some drugs, high fat diets or dietary indiscretions. The disease can present in a number of different ways, although the most consistent sign is vomiting. Other signs include reduced appetite, weakness, painful abdomen and sometimes dehydration. To make a diagnosis of pancreatitis we look at the signs the animal is showing on physical examination, as well as confirming it will a blood test to look at certain blood enzyme levels. It is important that other causes of similar signs are ruled out to make sure our diagnosis is accurate. X-rays usually aren’t helpful in diagnosing pancreatitis but are important to rule out blockage of the intestines. Sometimes we don’t find out the cause of the pancreatitis. Therapy is aimed at supporting the animal and includes pain relief, aggressive fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication and nutritional support. Once the animal recovers from the acute episode then we usually change them onto a prescription diet long term to try and prevent recurrence in the future.
