Chocolate Poisoning |
|
|
Chocolate poisoning is a common problem in dogs, especially around holidays. Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to dogs. Dogs will readily eat a toxic dose of chocolate. Symptoms of theobromine poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, abnormal stiff gait and increased urination. In severe cases the dog may suffer muscle tremors, convulsions, heart arrhythmia's, and they may fall into a coma.
The toxicity of chocolate is dose-dependent; hence a large dog eating a
small amount of chocolate may not get sic, but a small dog eating a
large amount of chocolate may become seriously ill or even die. Cooking
chocolate and dark chocolate are the most dangerous. A 10kg dog can be
poisoned by 60 grams of dark chocolate.
If you suspect that your dog may have chocolate poisoning, take it to
your vet immediately. If your dog is acting normally but you know it
has eaten a large amount of chocolate you should still see your vet as
soon as possible. Treatment for theobromine poisoning may be required
for several days as this toxin is eliminated from the body very slowly.
