Ear cleaning is relatively easy, the key is a calm approach and adequate restraint. Your vet or vet nurse can give you a demonstration to get you started. Cleaning your pet’s ears may be a two person job.

The best way to hold your dog is to gently hug it under its neck with one of your arms with your other hand on its head if required. This will give you plenty of control and restraint. When cleaning your cat’s ears it may be helpful to wrap your cat in a towel.

It is important to use a good veterinary ear cleaning solution. This may be purchased at Pets n Vets veterinary clinic.

Never poke anything into your pet’s ear canal without veterinary supervision as you may damage the ear canal or rupture the ear drum. As a general rule clean the ears by letting the cleaning solution bring the discharge and debris to the outside of the canal to be wiped away.

First remove any discharge that is on the surface of the ear. Then gently lift up the ear and partially fill the ear with cleaning solution. It is important to lift the ear vertically so that the solution with flow down the ear canal. After applying the solution gently massage the base of the ear. Soak up any fluid that comes out of the ear.

Once the ear is clean you can apply and required medications. Don’t forget to reward your pet after cleaning its ears!
