FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder) is a syndrome seen worldwide in cats. Symptoms include; frequent urination, straining and pain, urinating in inappropriate places, blood, crystals or mucous in the urine, and urethral blockage (the most serious complication). Blockage occurs when crystals and mucous obstruct the urethra and is more common in male cats. Attempts to urinate are unsuccessful and the condition is very painful. Unless the obstruction is relieved quickly, kidney failure or even bladder rupture could result! If your cat is painful or collapsed, regard it as an emergency

The ultimate cause of FLUTD is still a mystery despite a great deal of research however, it is more common in the spring time, in cats that use dirt boxes and in those fed a diet high in magnesium or diets that produce alkaline urine.

Treatment depends on symptom severity and is usually long-term. Often a special prescription diet is all that is needed but cats with complete obstruction will require a general anaesthetic to remove the blockage.

A special cat litter is available that absorbs urine and changes colour if FLUTD is present. It lets you know that you cat is developing a problem and that you need to contact your veterinarian ASAP for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
