Introducing your Cat into a New Home Print E-mail
Moving house can be very stressful not only for yourself but for your cat. Some cats take longer to settle into a new environment than others, but there are things you can do to ease the transition.

Ideally, give the cat its own escape-proof room equipped with bedding, a hiding place (under a bed), food and water and a litter tray. A scratching-post and toys are also a good idea.

It is recommended that you use ‘Feliway’ - a feline facial pheromone diffuser (available from your veterinarian). When cats feel safe they rub their chin against furniture and deposit pheromones, expressing a message of well-being and security. ‘Feliway’ mimics the cat's natural pheromones and keeps them calm.

Be patient. It can take quite a while until they feel comfortable enough to venture into other rooms. Spend time with your cat during this period of adjustment and try to maintain as much of a routine as possible.

When they seem secure and it is time to introduce them to the outdoors wait until just before mealtime. Leave the door open so they have an obvious way back into the house and stay close to them while they explore. Scattering some of their used litter on the garden may help make them feel more comfortable.
