As our cats and dogs get older many will develop arthritis. This is a very common problem often seen as stiffness, reluctance to exercise, and pain. Various prescription medications are available to make our arthritic pets more comfortable as they age. However, there are several other options available to prevent and relieve the pain of this disease.
It is important to maintain your pet at a healthy weight. If your pet
is overweight it is more likely to develop arthritis at an earlier age.
Weight loss significantly reduces joint strain. If you are concerned
about your pet’s weight bring him/her into Pets n Vets for a free

Purebred and large breed dogs are at increased risk of developing
arthritis. In these dogs try not to over-exercise them in their first 1
– 2 years of life. Make sure your puppy is feed a high quality puppy
food to ensure appropriate calcium levels.
Make sure your arthritic pet has a warm bed in winter, it may help to
raise there bed off the floor or ground. Cool temperatures will
aggravate your pet’s arthritis.
