FIV and FeLV Print E-mail
Feline AID's (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV)) can result in blood disorders, cancers and immune system problems that may hinder a cat’s ability to protect itself against other infections.   An infected cat may show a loss of appetite, diarrhoea, weight loss, poor coat, inflammation of the gums and infections throughout the body. Unfortunately there is no specific treatment to eliminate these diseases from an infected cat and although the clinical signs can be treated as they arise, most cats will eventually die of their infection or have to be euthanased. It is irresponsible to allow an infected cat to roam and potentially infect other cats.  Although the symptoms of both diseases can be similar, the specific ways in which they caused differs. Any cat can potentially catch FIV or FeLV but leukaemia tends to be more common in multi-cat households where cats might groom one another, and FIV is seen more often in fighting male cats as it is passed through bites. Prevention involves keeping your cat away from infected cats and vaccinations are available to help protect uninfected cats. FIV requires an initial course of three vaccinations 3 weeks apart, and leukaemia two vaccinations 3 weeks apart. Both should be followed by yearly boosters.
